KFF Offers CLE Course Titled “Follow the Money: A Litigator’s Guide to Tax Return Analysis”

FL CLE on Tax Returns in Business Litigation

Kanter Financial Forensics is now offering Florida law firms and bar associations a continuing education course on the topic “Follow the Money: A Litigator’s Guide to Tax Return Analysis.”

This course will give civil litigation attorneys insight into how to use business tax returns to uncover income, assets, and liabilities that can reveal hidden financial transactions or potential fraud. Information covered during the session includes the following:

  • Identification of the most important business tax schedules, including Schedules A through E.
  • Insights on the purpose and content of Schedule K-1, which reports each business owner’s share of income, deductions, credits, and ownership percentages in partnerships, S corporations, and LLCs. Schedule K-1 can provide context and detail behind the numbers, including balance sheets, capital accounts, and footnotes that may reveal loans to owners, asset sales, or unusual transactions.
  • Guidance on spotting red flags for fraud associated with inconsistent income, excessive deductions, unexplained asset transfers, or underreported distributions.

The insights gleaned from tax returns can support motions for discovery, deposition questions, and expert testimony. Tax returns reveal financial truth when paired with subpoenas for bank records, business ledgers, and correspondence.

The course is approved by The Florida Bar for 1.0 General and 0.5 Professionalism CLE credits. There is a 1.0 certification credit for tax law. The 50-minute course can be taught in person by CPA Brad Kanter or as a webinar.

A CLE course can be arranged by contacting Brad Kanter via phone at 813-820-1068 or email at contact@kanterff.com.
